Where can I get Deep Dish Chicago pizza in Los Angeles? And preferably something with tomato sauce, a great regular crust and nothing in any way affiliated with people who'd be crazy enough to put goat cheese on a pizza?

When visiting friends in L.A. I've had deep dish pizza at Zelo.

As L.A. Weekly put it:

"Los Angeles is populated with pizzerias ringing changes on the deep-dish Chicago formula, and Zelo certainly doesn't claim to make Chicago-style pizza, but in spirit it is probably the closest in town to the spirit of the original Pizzeria Uno formula, which is to say a deep, biscuit-inspired crust, a substantial mantle of cheese, and a profound layering of meat, crushed tomatoes and other ingredients."

According to the Uno's website there are no locations in L.A. -- nearest are 4 in and around San Diego.

I've never had pizza in Chicago, but the stuff at Numero Uno has the deepest crust I've ever seen in Los Angeles. Might do in a pinch.

From the comments in this thread, they recommend "Casa Bianca on Colorado Blvd.", "Tony's Little Italy in Placentia", and "Chicago Pasta House on Sunnymead in Moreno Valley".

Personally, I'd just have one shipped to you. *borken beat me to it

Unfortunately, unless they import the cheese from Wisconsin, it's just never going to be quite the same.

Also: Uno may have been the first, but it certainly isn't the best deep dish around. In my book, deep dish should have sauce covering the top.

Also, I've tried Casa Bianca's deep-dish, and found it to be too doughy in all the wrong places. But if you're ever in the mood for thin-crust, theirs is absolutely superb.

Yeah, it's Casa Bianca's thin crust you want -- definitely superior to their deep-dish. (Of course, I never liked deep-dish, even when I lived in Chicago... I am one of those rare breeds who prefers my pizza St. Louis-style.)

Definitely deep-dish. I love it. They claim "Chicago-style", but I haven't been to Chicago in a while to say for sure. Several locations around LA.

I *don't* know Chicago pizza, but I do know that at our local Albertsons (in Orange County), you can get frozen Uno's pizzas in the deli section (not the frozen pizza section). They're pretty good.
