Best x-box Games for a Mario/cartoony/animal crossing/sports game lover?

Basically, I don’t like many of the Halo, Assassin’s Creed, or those type of shooter games. I have a switch which I love but I really like either “cute” games (ie: Mario, Donkey Kong, Hollow Knight) or sports games (Go vacation, FIFA soccer, Tony Hawk, etc)

If I don’t want to go around shooting aliens or having realistic wars (not totally against it - I’ve seen play through of Ascent and it looks fun), what games would you try for Xbox S?

Rocket league

Deep rock galactic (it's a shooter game but still fun)

Stardew valley

Red dead redemption 2

These are games that 1.) my young daughter likes watching and 2.) I've enjoyed playing!

New Super Lucky's Tale
3D platformer, very charming and vastly improved over "regular" Super Lucky's Tale

Pikuniku
2D platform/adventure, quirky and uplifting, a red bean with legs smashes capitalism

Rain On Your Parade
Cute, funny indie puzzle game about being a raincloud and ruining folks' day

Untitled Goose Game
it is a beautiful day in the village and you are a horrible goose

Dragon Quest Builders 2
Charming Minecraft-like with a story and quests. lots of dialogue though. too much? No foreknowledge of the first game OR Dragon Quest required.

Final Fantasy XIV Online is an MMO, it is very very cute. Both the landscape and the characters are just adorable.

I’m not totally clear on Xbox backwards compatibility, but if you can, go for Viva Piñata! So much wholesome yet weird fun. You plant a garden to attract animals that are also piñatas full of candy, and get a colorful little ecosystem going!

outer wilds: explore a small quirky solar system with a bunch of fun weirdo planets.
the witness: oodles of puzzles on a beautiful myst-ish island.

My son sounds like he has your taste in cute and A Hat in Time was his recent favorite. (The link is to Steam but we have it on the Switch.)

Another vote for New Super Lucky's Tale, and A Hat In Time. Both are cute, fun, and engaging.

My partner I and I quite enjoyed Human Fall Flat.

Psychonauts 2 just came out, it's a very good platformer in a kooky stop-motion style about going into people's minds, fighting their inner demons, and helping them find peace. Super creative, very funny, just the right amount of gross.

Crash 4: It's About Time came out for the current Xbox Series I think about six months ago? It's a platformer with a very Saturday morning cartoon aesthetic, quite tricky but Hollow Knight suggests it won't be a problem for you.

I don't know how much these will work for you but here's some more left-field suggestions:
Fall Guys: an online obstacle course game inspired by TV shows like Wipeout, It's a Knockout and Takeshi's Castle.
CrossCode: an amnesiac, mute young woman plays a MMO game built for real on a distant planet to try and recover her memories. This is an action RPG with a strong puzzle/exploration bent; maybe it's your thing?
Ori and the Will of the Wisps: this is in the same genre as Hollow Knight, if you actually enjoyed that and wasn't just using it as an example of 'cute'. Also check out its predecessor, Ori and the Blind Forest; I hear good things about Ender Lilies, a similar game.
Yoku's Island Express is a great idea: a pinball platformer.
Hades is an excellent roguelike about escaping the Greek Underworld. Strong story, excellent music and art direction, impeccably designed, absolutely none of the things you have asked for other than 'please no realistic grim shooty types'.

Okay I've found out that games on the Xbox One are all mostly playable on the Series S so I could be here all day. A lot of games go for a more approachable aesthetic, these days! Seconding the recommendations for Rocket League, Outer Wilds (do not confuse with The Outer Worlds), and A Hat In Time.

Note that most of the games mentioned here (especially anything made by a Microsoft studio) are available via the Xbox Game Pass. You can sign up for a one-month trial for $1 and check out a ton of games.

Response by poster: It looks like most of these games are available on Switch. Is there any point to have an Xbox?

Best answer: Is there any point to have an Xbox?

Not for cutesy fun / casual games really. People usually go Xbox or PS4 for hardcore shooter games or the latest, graphics intensive games.

You can search for "Xbox series s exclusives" to see the list of games you can't play on the switch.

Is there any point to have an Xbox?

In this generation, the point to having an Xbox is Game Pass. Microsoft have long had a problem where the Xbox division effectively competes with Windows as a gaming platform; Game Pass is their current solution to the problem. It's a decent value proposition, which is more than I can say for Xbox Gold at this point.

Both Ori games (Ori and the Blind Forest & Ori and the Will O' the Wisps) are beautiful, solid platformers. I really enjoy FIFA also. I did not expect to like Forza Horizon (4) as much as I did - it's a beautiful open world racer.

For all of these, GamePass is a nice option, as the EA Sports games are included.
