Handycam got broke. Need fix.

Where can I get a replacement part for my Sony Handycam?

Has anyone had any luck ordering replacement parts from Sony?

My camcorder (DCR-HC18e) broke the other day and instead of paying the £175+ for the repair, I'm going DIY.

All I need is this:

It's a ribbon type connector and looks pretty much bespoke, so I guess it's not something I can buy from Maplin.

But where do I get it from? I've contacted Sony but they told me to send the camera in so they can have a look at it themselves.

Espares doesn't list that part, but might be able to order it. There's no UK service centre listed on sony.co.uk, but there is an Irish one where you can put in a request.

Back in 2002 they had a form allowing you to order spares. They couldn't work out which part I wanted so they mailed me a full set of exploded diagrams for my stereo. I phoned them up and got the replacement ribbon cable for £2.

That form appears to be gone. You could try phoning the first number here, which might get you through to the same people I dealt with.

You might have better luck calling up a local repair place and asking for them to order the part for you. You should expect to pay some markup on the part plus a fee to look up the part number (it can take time to find the right manual, then the right page, then the right flex cable, then the box where it shows the part number, etc).

I worked at a repair place, and these requests came in often. Some other places would have you come in so you could find the part number in the Service Manual yourself (so they won't be liable for ordering the wrong part).
