Chinese Assisted Living in the US?

My parents are getting the the point where we need to figure out what to do when they can no longer live at home safely. Do you know of any assisted living and memory care facilities in the Boston area that have Chinese speaking staff and maybe even Chinese meals?

My parents are Toisanese and do speak English, but having a Chinese community and support would be a huge help.

I'd also love to hear about facilities you know about in other parts of the country. My brother lives near Boston, so this makes sense to us, but open to knowing what else is out there.

I think the Greater Boston Chinese Golden Age Center would probably be a great resource for your family. They're maybe more focused on seniors living at home and/or with family but they have a lot of day programs for Chinese seniors and I bet they can tell you about what's out there in terms of residential care.

South Shore Elder Services has an Asian outreach program and does referrals/options counseling.

In the Puget Sound there is Aegis Garden (private, for-profit). And Kin On provides some assisted living options. Nikkei Manor originally served the Japanese community, but serves people from all backgrounds.

National Asian Pacific Center for Aging might be a helpful resource, as well as the Diverse Elders Coalition.

there is Hamilton Park Longevity Garden in Brooklyn

If they do come to Boston, the Greater Boston Chinese Cultural Association (located in Newton) has a Happy Elders program that sounds like a great opportunity to socialize.

For Toisan expats, it's hard to beat San Francisco, tons of Toisanese (and Cantonese around) since there were Chinese in the US back in the 1800's. As I live in San Francisco, I'll talk about stuff available in San Francisco.

Living is a different problem. There are independent living support facilities such as OnLok.org that can offer everything from a full-service health plan including home care visits to just senior center with activities (and transportation to and from the place) and even daily food delivery.

There is also self help for the elderly https://www.selfhelpelderly.org/ which was launched for Asian seniors, but is not exclusive to Asians. It has everything from senior housing to cleaning services to social services and more.

Beware of keeping your parents in the suburbs. If they are active and mobile, they probably appreciate being near a Chinese hub, and they are all over San Francisco, not just Chinatown, though concentration of Toisanese may vary somewhat. Clement, Noriega, Irving are all possibilities, within few blocks.

Maybe they can get by with a periodic visit from a caretaker (who does the cleanups, laundry, and misc stuff). Depends on what they want vs. what you all can contribute, I guess.
