Question: Wedding gift ideas - Covid edition

Hi! My friend got married recently, in a small ceremony due to COVID social distancing, etc. To be honest, we aren't super close, but we're friends from college (back in 2005) and we've have kept in touch through FB and in-person by supporting major life events and creative endeavors throughout the years.

I want to send something to him and his wife to celebrate the occasion (they are planning a bigger celebration once it becomes safer for large crowds to gather) - I'm thinking of something a little more than just a card but nothing over the top. They are both fun-loving comedians. Ideas?? Thanks!

Chocolate. Maybe a stack of Tony's Chocolonely's?

a board game sounds great for this! Since they're comedians, how about a fun party game like:

Times Up (a classic!), Just One, or Gorilla Marketing (disclaimer: my husband designed this [but it's legitimately great])

or if you want to go a bit more romantic, and they're gamer type people, my favourite games to play with just me and my husband are Spirit Island and Hanabi.

Did they register anywhere? Otherwise, check or gift card. People need money, not board games.

If they don't have a registry, I would either go with cash or ask them directly how you can support them rather than go with a guess or your gut. That's how people end up trying to start their newly married life with like 37 different spatulas and no forks.

My go-to gift in this situation is always a nice picture frame—maybe a nice pewter or silver-plated. They can display a wedding photo in it, and you can get as fancy/expensive as you wish. There are tons of options.

If they drink, how about a nice bottle of champagne or a spirit they both like? I think that's a pretty low stakes gift in that they can drink it, or keep it on the shelf for when they get around to it / have a party, or regift it to someone else if they don't get around to it. It's like a step up from just a card but not in the territory of actual registry wedding gift you'd give if you went to a wedding.

I like to pair something from the registry with something to de-blandify it. E.g. , if they registered for dishes and silverware, give them two of the cereal bowls and/or spoons, but add a box of Lucky Charms and Life cereal, and write that you wish them all the best Luck for a happy Life together.

A childhood friend of mine who now lives multiple hundreds of kilometres away from home got Zoom married in October.

We're both very fond of our hometown, so I sent him and his wife a kind of care package of local treats and small gifts and a check for $100.
