I'm looking for heavy intense driving emotional engaging longform metal and drone tracks. I prefer instrumental but hit me with whatever you gots. General preferences below the fold! But please open my mind to what's out there. I can't wait to hear what you come up with.

I'm into, but not limited to, the following:

Boris
Godflesh
YOB
Shizuka (that Japanese noise band that was on Persona Non Grata)
Cobalt
Prurient
The Body
Thou
Bell Witch sometimes
Sunn O)))
Pantera

Thank you so much.

Best answer: Sleep- Dopesmoker.

The album is one track over 60 mins and unlike anything else. It's the most famous of all epic metal/ doom/ stoner/heavy albums.. in case you're unfamiliar.

Best answer: Seconding Sleep for sure. Would also add Om and Wrekmeister Harmonies, which I learned about from the outstanding annotated comments on this AskMe a couple years ago.

Best answer: Definitely recommend checking out Mesarthim, especially for the dronier side of things.

May not meet your requirements for "heavy" or "driving" but Earth's The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull scratches this itch for me.

Most everything I came to recommend has been spoken for, but I'll add pg.lost (check out their live stuff), and even though they're not necessarily "metal" they're close enough - Explosions in the Sky.

Noise rock-psych-punk wall of sound, but not metal: Destruction Unit. Let it wash over you like hot sand.

You might also want to check out Gong Gong Gong. One guitarist who also sings (in Cantonese!) and one bassist. That is all. That is enough. Definitely “driving,” but maybe not metal enough for you.

Best answer: I may be off base but check out Author & Punisher. Maybe more industrial than metal, but very droney, instrumental, and heavy.

An umbrella term for some of the bands mentioned above: Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Explosions in the Sky, This Will Destroy You, MONO, and a few others is post-rock.

Some of my faves not mentioned (yet) are:
- Dirty Three
- 65daysofstatic
- Mogwai
- Do Make Say Think
- The Six Parts Seven
- Tortoise

You can find live shows for a number of the bands listed on the Live Music Archive. I have several Mogwai, EITS, and GY!BE shows from there.

Lots of good stuff in the comments as well.

I would not call the music of avant-garde composer Phill Niblock "metal," exactly, but MY GOD DOES IT DRONE, in the most delightful way. I've been really enjoying his work lately, and our tastes would seem to overlap a bit.

It's got vocals, but courtesy of another MeFi post, I found the band Ex Eye. Here's one live concert that was linked there. It has a saxophone and some pretty wild noises. And very drone-y and the like, though I don't know the rest of the bands most have linked, besides Pelican.

Best answer: Came here to recommend a few that have been mentioned: Fuck Buttons, GYBE, Isis... and want to add, while neither drone or metal, that Slint's Spiderland is definitely heavy and emotionally engaging.
