Can I get the New York Times stories read to me in the car

I use the New York App on my phone quite a bit. I can't seem to read all the things I want to and am wondering of there is an app or utility that will read select stories to me while driving.

iOS can do this natively, for anything on screen.

Once set up, you can use a gesture to read out what’s on your screen, including web pages and news articles. There’s also controls to fast forward, rewind etc.

If the news can be saved to Pocket the app, I believe the mobile app has the option to read it back to you.

Otherwise, since NYT app has a paywall, IIRC, ability to clip from it is rather limited. Maybe enable the assistive functions and see if one of them can read off the page to you?

If you have a NYT subscription there are screen readers that will read it aloud to you, VoiceOver for iPhones and TalkBack for Androids. I suppose these would also work for non-subscribers who just want an occasional article.

Audm is a subscription service, which bills itself as "Listen to longform journalism you don’t have time to read." I've never subscribed to it, but on occasion, I've come articles that had the read aloud option from them.

I was also going to suggest trying Pocket, if the articles will save to it. The mobile app does have the read-aloud option. I think one of the logos on their main page is the New York Times, so I'm guessing odds are good it will work.

I just tried iOS’s native Speak Screen functionality on the NYT app. Didn't work on the front page (“no speakable content?”) but it did work on articles decently well. I have Speak Screen triggered automatically (through the ios settings) with a two finger swipe down from the top of the screen.

The PressReader app, which downloads a digital replica of the printed edition, will read any article out loud. It's $5/week but free if you have any subscription to the printed or Web edition – you should see a "Replica Edition" link on your Account/Subscription page.

I’ve got Audm. It doesn’t have every article, but it has a lot more than just The NY Times.
