gmail confusion

I recently cleaned up old emails and spam, etc. from gmail. I deleted "sent" emails from that folder as well. Then I deleted the "trash" folder and I guess that was a mistake.

When I went back to my "inbox" I noticed that a few of the emails that were part of the same thread as the ones I deleted from the "sent" folder were gone. I really didn't want those deleted. Is there a way to tell gmail not to delete emails that are linked in the "sent" and "inbox"? Or is there another work around?
Fortunately those that were deleted from the inbox weren't critical. I just don't want that to happen again.

Thanks.

One way to do it is to turn off threading or “conversation view” in the gmail settings. This will split out all emails individually. After you delete a bunch you can turn conversation view back on.
