Question: Children's Book

I am trying to find an old book from my childhood (the 1960s): it involved a (possibly magical) bedspread and Sirius (the Dog Star). I remember lots of blues and greens in the illustrations, but not much else. Does this ring a bell? Can you help me find the title?

If you get nothing here on AskMeFi, you'll probably be able to get an answer for $2 at Loganberry books Stump the Bookseller. They solved 2 of these that were driving me nuts last year.

I immediately thought of Diana Wynne Jones's Dogsbody, but it looks like that wasn't published till 1975.

Can't help with the specific book, but can recommend the Fiction-L list as a better resource to start with than Stump the Bookseller. You get a host of librarians on an email list for free instead of one bookstore which takes money just to *submit* a question.

Looks like bim's book was published in 2002, so that can't be it.
