Can I rotate a video?

Is there software that will rotate a video file?

A friend filmed a video in .ASF format but tilted the camera on its side (90 degrees) so the entire tall object would fit in the frame. I would like to re-encode video rotated so folks won't need to tilt their head to watch it. Is this possible?

If you're using Windows XP, go to Start > Accessories > Entertainment > Windows Movie Maker. If you import the ASF, you should be able to rotate it.

Also easily accomplished with vitualdub.

File > Open video file (open your file)

Video > Filters > Add > Rotate (rotate however youwant)

File > Save As AVI

arg - ok, I now see that newer versions of virtualdub dont support asf. You can download one that does here.

Just a warning: every time a video file is recoded, the video quality drops. Like JPG, MPEG noise accumulates with successive recodings.

Response by poster: Thanks for your answers. I ended up using a program called SUPER to convert the file to uncompressed .AVI (very very little quality degradation), then used filters in VirtualDubMod to rotate the video, clip out the section that I want, resize (without stretching) the frame to 4:3, and finally recompress. The end result is here on YouTube.

My biggest problem was working with the codec the camera used to record the video. I don't know if it's due to codecs installed on my computer or what but Windows Media Player wouldn't play it, VirtualDub (no matter what version) didn't like it, and Window Movie Maker choked on it too. It seems that SUPER was the only program that would do anything with it. Well, let me take that back, Media Player Classic would play it.
