I need to simulate breathing for cancer treatment

My company sells equipment for cancer treatment that, among other things, tracks the breathing movement of a patient. In order to test this function, we use a small "breathing box" (video here). This amazingly hi-tec piece of equipment is...a "reborn" doll breathing simulator. They're no longer available and we need something that performs the same function.

Maybe we will have to get something manufactured, but I feel like there must be something out there already that we can repurpose.
  • Small and portable
  • Battery powered or rechargeable
  • A cycle that is within a realistic respiratory rate: 12-20ish breaths per minute
  • Adjustable rate not necessary, but would be a bonus
  • The area that moves can be small; we could always put a piece of cardboard or something on top to increase the target area

  • Anyone have an idea?

I found some similar reborn doll devices with a Google search. But it also seems like a natural fit for someone trying to make a buck with a 3d printer.

Look into artificial lungs used to test respirators.

Some of the Perfect Petzzz Available at Walmart have a breathing mechanism. It may be similar to your reborn baby doll mechanism.

If you just need something that goes up and down rhythmically, maybe you could make something out of Lego Mindstorms or something.
