What is this black-and-white children's picture book about a mouse who makes music in colors?

I've been trying to figure this out for years, but now I want to buy this for my nephew. It was a beautiful small children's picture book I saw at a Scholastic Book Fair when I was Scholastic Book Fair age, so the late 90's, about a mouse in a world drawn in black and white (thin black ink lines, white backgrounds) who makes music, and then the music is in color? By the end of the book there's all kinds of music in different colors. It might have been done in water color.

The mouse was kind of peanut-shaped but I'm not 100% that part of the memory is correct.

Thanks!

This is probably not it but I grew up the Leo Lionni books and your description reminded me of his book Frederick. Highly recommend all of his books actually.

Response by poster: Not to threadsit but I suddenly remembered an important detail!: I'm fairly sure the illustrator or author was Japanese. The book was in English, though, sold at a US Book Fair.

I immediately thought of Frederick as well. Scholastic distributes it, so it could have been available through their book fairs—but the author/illustrator isn’t Japanese. (It is a WONDERFUL book!)
