What single work, preferably a readable one for a general audience, would you recommend for someone who knows nearly nothing about the history of the modern state of Israel? I don't want a detailed account that finishes with 1948, as I'm as interested in the more recent history too.
Here's a few recent publications for you to consider:
Bernard Regan, The Balfour Declaration (Verso, 2018)
Ian Black, Enemies and Neighbours: Arabs and Jews in Palestine and Israel, 1917-2017 (Allen Lane, 2017).
Illan Pappe, The Idea of Israel (Verso 2016)
Neil Caplan, The Israel-Palestine Conflict: Contested Histories (Wiley-Blackwell, 2009)
Shira N. Robinson, Citizen Strangers: Palestinians and the Birth of Israel’s Liberal Settler State (Stanford University Press, 2013)
