Metafilter, what is my cat's name?
March 4, 2020 2:18 PM   Subscribe

I just adopted a giant 4 year old baby-cat. She is the sweetest. I haven't been able to settle on a name yet, so I implore you... Help me name my cat!

I have a tradition of giving my pets Slavic names, but it's not a deal-breaker for the right name. Also doesn't have to be a traditionally "feminine" name, she kinda has a gender-bending feel to her (I could be projecting of course!)

Here are pictures!

Goodness, I immediately thought of this story (Siberian, technically.) Some inspiration there or even with this story, perhaps?

Zvon
Zvon means "bell" in some Slavic languages or "bell sound" in Russian.
Because of those striking and unexpected tail rings.

I dint know why, but I saw her and thought Arabelle. Which has literally never popped into my head as a possible name ever before, so it must be her.

Depending on personality:
Marzanna/Mara (goddess of spring but also death)
Zorianna/Zirka/Zee (tying into the zebra stripes on her tail) (star)

I kind of like that she's black and white and depending on personality "Killer Whale" could work.

Disclaimer: I'm a big fan of weird names for pets though (I have a cat named Battleship though) and it amuses me that Russian for whale is "кит" which is pronounced "kit" which would be an awesome bilingual tie in.

I had a Russian language teacher named Luda / Lyuda. She told us that the name means "of the people". If your kitty loves people, it might be appropriate.

Response by poster: I hope y'all don't think I'm ungrateful for the ideas, but I ended up going in a different direction... Her name is Octavia Zoltan Indrelie. Pierogi is definitely going to be in heavy rotation in the nicknames category, though. And I had a cat named Nikita several years ago. <3

Just wanted to chime in that markings-wise she looks like a cousin to Yevgeny and Ludmilla, the cats I had in my terms/twenties.
