Recommendations and experiences of equestrian NYC

A friend and I, both former riders, would like to get back in the saddle. But it's been 30 plus years, and for now we're just looking for a quiet, easy ride in the NYC area. Can anyone recommend a horse riding place, or share their experiences? Ideally it would be accessible by public transportation. Or, if in the burbs, quick train plus short taxi/car service.

Don’t know a thing about it other than having walked past, but the last stop on the 1 train gets you to stables in Van Cortlandt Park.

I’m not a rider either but I know Pelham Bay Park has horse trails as well, and you can get almost all the way there by subway.

there are horses (and horse trails) in Prospect Park, i assume coming out of the Kensington Stables.

Search The Chronicle of the Horse forums, I know I've seen a recent-ish post there about riding near NYC, and other older ones. I want to say it was in the Hunter / jumper forum but not totally sure.
