DIY in Photoshop:

- Start with Helvetica (or almost any sans serif font) black text on a white background
- apply gaussian blur (amount will vary with font size and how much of the effect you want)
- In levels move the blackpoint slider up till the desired effect is reached, move the whitepoint slider down to clean up extraneous gray bits

neustile That WhatTheFont app is very cool - I just gave it a whirl and it worked wonderfully - finding Blur-Light straight out. Time to find some more stuff to throw at it.

On further consideration:
- start with a bold font
- move the whitepoint slider down past the 50% percent mark, the move the black point slider up.

It's eroded as well as rounded.
