Any suggestions for magazines covering Anime?

I've been asked to identify magazines available in the United States, and Web sites in general, that cover Anime and Asian cinema. Problem is, I've virtually no knowledge of either subject.

Does anyone have favorite mags or Web sites covering those things? I know there must be a ton of Web sites out there, but finding the good, professional ones is difficult. And it's even harder to identify the magazines. For instance, there must be some Japanese magazines that have distribution over here, but I just have no clue which ones. All help gratefully received...

Best answer: Animerica used to be one of the longest running mags on the topic. However, last June, it published its last real issue, and now just puts out a paltry quarterly mini-magazine thats not really worth the effort.

Anime Insider is published by the well known Wizard, who publish a monthly on comic books.

Another long running anime mag is Protoculture Addicts

Newtype is relatively new to the U.S., only introduced a few years ago, but is the english version of one the longest running Japanese magazines on Anime, etc.

There also is Giant Robot, which is a more general Asian entertainment magazine.

Hope that helps.

Another magazine is anime insider.

Also, for information on different animes, animenfo.

Web Sites: AnimeNFO Anime News Network AnimeOnDVD

And most of my blogging these days is about anime, but it doesn't qualify as "good, professional".

Giant Robot usually has interviews with Asian directors and articles on Asian film (although it is an Asian pop culture magazine generally, not just a mag on Asian film).

Let me add that the Anime News Network is an excellent source for finding out information on an anime or manga. They have online encyclopedias which are a great boon when one is seeking works done by the same individual or want to confirm if that seiyuu is the person you're thinking of.

Response by poster: Thanks, all -- that was incredibly helpful. I'm most grateful.

Anime News Network and Protoculture Addicts are hand-in-hand. I used to buy NewType but I became pretty disappointed in the heavy-presentation/little-content magazine. When a friend pointed out that NewType is exclusive about the anime studios it covers, I dropped it. Protoculture Addicts seems to be it's antithesis, with pages crammed with text and black-and-white images everywhere but the cover, but I find I get more of my money's worth and I end up reading it cover to cover instead of just glossing over the big two-page spreads.

Oh, and WORD UP to my homeys in Toronto at the alcoholic anime club. You know who you are.
