Question: Three column view in Apple Mail - is it possible?

I love most of Apple Mail. I love the three-column wide view of Thunderbird. (Vertical view) Is there any way to keep the features of Mail, but hack it to display lists and previews more like Thunderbird? I've found interface hacks and add-ons for almost every other possible option.

There unfortunately isn't any way to, but here's a sexy mockup to drool over while you dream of all that Mail could be.

There are endless Thunderbird extensions out there, and Thunderbird itself is built to be extensible; could you come at this from the other direction, and tweak Thunderbird until it behaves enough like Apple Mail to make you happy?

Blah. What an utter waste of screen real estate. As long as its optional, I don't care if Apple makes it possible or not.

MacOSXHints recently wrote about a MailBundle that gives you a three-pane interface.

I tried it and it seems to work OK. The annoying thing I've found is that when you search, the search results use different columns and when you switch back to the regular inbox view, the columns are out of whack and are a pain to put back.
