Firefox is too slow

Firefox Filter: Recently, Firefox on my XP laptop has become incredibly slow. It seems that the problem is that it is downloading images one by one. Even when it is the same image displayed repeatedly on a webpage. I've run every kind of Spyware and Virus software I can find on my computer, and uninstall and reinstalled the latest version of FF all to no avail. How can I get back up to speed?

When I did the uninstall FF came back with all it's preferences and extensions. (the only extension I really have on this system is the developer extension)

A long time back, off a Metafilter post I made some changes to FF, I think it was called Faster Fox. I don't believe that this is the problem though.

Does anyone know what could be the cause of this mysterious condition?

Type "about:config" into the address line, then find:

network.http.pipelining -- make sure it's "true"
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests -- and set to 30-ish.

Start it with a new profile. If that helps, then something about your current profile (an extension, an extension's configuration, something) is insane. Copy your bookmarks over from the old one, and start over.

Everything seemed to be setup correctly in the about:config thing. But, creating a new profile did the trick. I guess I'm starting from scratch.

Thanks for the help.

You don't have to! You can copy over bookmarks and so on. You just need to locate the right files and move them over, most of the time.

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder should help.

First, get the latest version (1.5.0.1) of Firefox. It is relatively more stable.

If that doesn't help, read more techniques to solve Firefox 1.5 problems
