Who is this “Maaaaaary…?” – Not Mary Tyler Moore (I think)

This has been driving me bats for the past few years – trying to remember a character from a ‘70s-era sitcom whose catchphrase was “Maaaaaaary.”

It’s ridiculous, but for some reason I feel like I need to know what show this was from. All I can recall is that there was a secondary female character in an old sitcom whose catchphrase was a drawn-out, somewhat disapproving and poutily delivered: “Maaaaaary.” The character would say it when addressing one of the main characters (obviously!) named Mary. I remember very little about the character except that maybe she was usually super-dressed up and fully manicured.

I’ve considered the sitcoms Soap and Mary Hartman (and obviously the Mary Tyler Moore show), but they don’t seem quite right. It feels more ‘70s than ‘80s, though because I was glued to the TV during both of those decades, it could be either. Anyone have any leads at all?

Best answer: It's later than the time period you're thinking of, but wasn't there a Mary in 227? I think i remember jaque having a particular way of pronouncing it.

Yes, 227. I loved that show when I was a young teen and for a couple weeks I had an annoying habit of saying, "I think not, Maaaary!" I don't know if the "I think not" was part of the sketch. Definitely 227!
