Identify a (possibly imaginary) tree

This tree appears in the Japanese Anime "Akira". I'm trying to figure out what species it is/might be.

Best answer: Mainly the twisted, woven trunk but also the foliage is close enough that it looks like a ficus tree to me.

Best answer: I was just going to say it looks like a braided ficus tree. Same general shape, indoors, ... the foliage is pretty dense and the tree is pretty big, but it's anime...
