Are Heavy Metal and 2000 AD Showcase still worth a sub?

I have been out of the new comics game for a long time now, but need a shot of cynical absurdist escapism. Heavy Metal the magazine and 2000 AD Showcase were a comfort to me long ago as the age of Regan was imploding under Spymaster Bush I.They are both still in publication. Are these still worthy anthologies I should ask for as a father's day subscription? Alternates worth the cash, online or paper?

Re “alternates”: the recent Netflix series Love, Death, and Robots has a significant “Heavy Metal” feel to it.

Response by poster: It felt really similar, both Continental and British. Like that, only more absurd and over the top.

2000ad writer here, of course it’s worth it.

Though if you don’t want to take my word for that 2000ad app and websites both have a Free Issues section that should give you a taste for both modern and classic 2000ad, as well as a story of mine set I. The movie Dredd universe.

If you’re interested in getting into the weekly comic I’d keep an eye out for a “jumping on Prog”, which is something they’ll do semi-regularly where every strip in the issue is episode 1 of a story. Looks like we are due one of those pretty soon.

There’s also a full range of graphic novels with completed stories - Blink is a recent one that’s pretty great.

I also like Image's 12-issue run of the Island anthology/grabbag.

Are they still accepting Future Shocks to the slushpile? Because I have two from when the Boy-Clinton was in charge I never got around to sending in. One involves a physical structure that encompasses star-systems entire and Chinese ghost stories, and the other was based on an MC 9000' Jesus song. Well, there's three, but the third is about a video-game nerd who sucks but wins cash prizes as he hires Gibson-style street samurai to kill his opponents mid-game. That's more modern crime than a Future Shock, these days.

Submission guidelines - competition is pretty tough and there’s often a long delay before they get back to you, but everything gets read. I’d also suggest considering submitting to Future Quake.
