How to compare Lactase units?

How does 9000 FCC of Lactase in Lactaid(tm) compare to Dr. Tobias' 500 ALU of Lactase?

My husband is Lactose intolerant so he takes one Lactaid - then he can drink a 16 oz latte. But he just started taking enzymes for heartburn and I see on the label it has Lactase but it is listed as 500 ALUs and I don't know how to compare them.

And how long do they last? If he takes one Lactaid how long after that can he safely drink a latte?

Best answer: FCCs and ALUs of lactase are the same thing, so those heartburn pills contain about 6% as much lactase as the lactaid pills.

My understanding is that you really can't overdose on Lactaid so when in doubt take another. I usually take another if it's been more than an hour.
