Requesting resolution for a code of conduct violation

Have you filed a code of conduct complaint and been happy with the outcome? If so, can you share whatwas done and/or what outcome you most wanted or requested? Secondarily, if you’ve watched a code of conduct investigation unfold, can you share outcomes that were considered and what eventually happened? Of course, negative examples can helpful here too.

About a year ago I was repeatedly harassed by an event organizer at the event. I filed a code of conduct complaint with the larger organization. They took it seriously and now the process is wrapping up. The process has gone in such a way that question of what I want is now on the table.

It’s been such a long and hard process that I haven’t been thinking about selecting the napkin colors for my victory party, so to speak. At first I doubted that anyone would take me seriously. Then the process was long. Now I’m busy working on other things I did this to protect other people from this person and their enablers. I thought I’d justbe adding a note in a file that would serve to bolster credibility for a future complaint.

And part of me feels like i already did enough, why should I have to think up or find ways to make this right? And then I think, why should I leave a chance for this harasser to craft their punishment?

I don’t think I want an apology from this person because I’m certain it would take the form of ‘I’m sorry you felt that way about a misunderstanding” and that would piss me off.

So. What did you want? Would you ask for something different now?

The things I'd be looking for are a) how the organization is going to make me feel safe at the next event (this may be banning the offender, ensuring that you won't encounter them, etc - since it's an organizer I think personally nothing else but a severing of the relationship would suffice) and b) how the organization is going to make sure this doesn't happen again generally. I would really like to see some effort towards training staff about harassment, in this case.

The point isn't punishment - the point is making the event safer. Too many organizations miss that point entirely.
