Have there been any studies on the relationship between the two?

Go on Google Scholar and search 'road dust asthma' and you will find lots of relevant studies.

The search term you want that links them is PM2.5.

Absolutely, lots, there's a link between traffic volume, roadway proximity, pm2.5, and asthma. A lot of areas are calculating/estimating the number of asthma cases that can be attributed to traffic. Many Departments of Health, especially in large cities, track this closely as they work to improve air quality. I work closely with people who do this; happy to answer more specific questions, feel free to memail me.
