Looking to buy a print magazine in the GTA

I feel deeply stupid asking this question, but here we go.

I recently heard Cameron Esposito interview Fran Tirado, the new deputy editor of Out Magazine. I would like to go ...somewhere... and physically purchase (or hold and flip through) current issues of said magazine. My public library does not have it in their subscriptions, either print or digitally. Our local Big Book chain bookstore (Indigo/Coles) didn’t seem to have it when I searched the online catalog.

Googling just brings me to options for subscribing, which is totally fine! But I’m not quite ready to take that plunge.

I know I can put in a request that the library add it, but in the meantime, does anyone know where I can go in person?

I am in the Hamilton/Burlington area, but am willing to consider Toronto.

Thank you all in advance for indulging me at 6AM.

Adult shops. Where I found copies of Bitch and Out and Advocate back in the day.

I'd try going into Chapters/Indigo - their online catalogue doesn't seem to list all magazines.

Brant St. Indigo seems to have the widest variety of magazines compared to Burlington Centre.

I’d call first but Glad Day in Toronto might be worth the trek. The reference library is likely to have it too - I checked the TPL catalogue and it looks like they do, as long as there’s only one Out. Magazine, they didn’t have a helpful thumbnail.

There's the Glad Day Bookshop, if you are willing to come to Toronto.

Also, try calling Presse Internationale

I think this should be a list of all the Toronto library branches which carry the magazine. It was somewhat hard to tease out of their website, but I eventually stumbled onto a search page via Google that would let me search magazine subscriptions.

Our local Big Book chain bookstore (Indigo/Coles) didn’t seem to have it when I searched the online catalog.

Periodicals are often maintained by a third party so the inventory is probably untracked by the store. From the store's perspective that managed inventory is all one big mass of [VENDOR] and there's no insight into individual titles. The best way to know if your local store has a particular title is to go look. A distant second would be to call the store and hope the employees are familiar enough with the titles they sell to answer the question without looking, or that they're not so busy that they can't lay eyeballs on it themselves.

Independent shops are a better bet for answering this question on the phone, both because the space premium means a tighter grip on inventory and because they'll be more familiar with the things people actually purchase there. But even a small shop might have a vendor managing inventory of periodicals.

Mixed Media usually has a good selection of alt magazines. And if not, owner Dave is a helpful guy and can probably point you to where else it might be locally.

Big B Comics might be another option. They had an alt magazine rack the last I checked.

Its definitely worth calling some of the independent bookstores in your area. My local carries a huge range of magazines that I never see in Indigo.

If all else fails, you can buy the single issue electronically through Zinio.

I stopped in at Glad Day and they ordinarily carry Out but due to some magazine distributor fuckery they haven't been receiving shipments lately of most magazines.

They definitely have it at the Bay/Bloor Indigo. About 15 copies on the shelf.

Is Bryan Prince Bookseller still around? If they are I'd give them a call. They are not too far from McMaster.
