Quick winter getaway from NYC

What are good places to go within driving distance of NYC that aren't just skiing?

My spouse and I have found ourselves with an extra week of vacation and are looking to go somewhere with the traditional winter amenities (skiing, indoor pool) that also has plenty of non-skiing stuff to do (museums, breweries, etc) nearby. What are our best options in the Mid-Atlantic or New England? Should we aim for a ski resort or a specific city?

Response by poster: 5 hours / 300ish miles.

However, if anyone wants to make a strong case for Montreal, we're listening.

I'm not sure how tightly you define driving distance, but Buffalo is 6-7 hours from NYC. There are a handful of small but solid ski resorts south of the city (Holiday Valley, Kissing Bridge), and there's surprising amount of things to do in Buffalo in the winter (Canalside, snowshoeing) plus a few excellent museums (Albright Knox, Burchfield-Penney) and lots of great food (don't get me wrong, the wings are good, but there's a lot going on. Las Puertas was a semifinalist for a James Beard Award this year, Sun is a fantastic representation of the area's Burmese population) and cool breweries (Resurgence, Big Ditch) and it's cheap enough that you can splurge on something like the hotel in a Richardson Romanesque former asylum or in a building designed by Louise Blanchard Bethune. It's also close to Niagara Falls, which is lovely in the winter.

If you head to the Poconos, you can base yourself at Kalahari for your indoor pool and waterpark action, then easily get to Camelback for skiing and snowtubing. There are a few breweries in the area plus small towns like Jim Thorpe to explore.

The Williamstown/North Adam's area of NW Massachusetts is rich in art museums. Skiing is not too far away, but I'm not a skier and can't give you names.
