Who makes this hiking sock?

Now that it's cold, I'm appreciating my hiking socks, but I don't where I got them to buy more. Who makes or sells these brown or blue thick socks?

Brown and blue are the two colors I have, and I've had the socks for ... Over a decade? I think of them as (men's) hiking socks, and they have no discerning markings. Thanks!

They look like they could be Darn Tough brand. You could bring one to REI and look at the different brands they sell to see if one matches.

Best answer: That looks like a Thoro to me.

Some people know birds, some people know football players...

I've seen socks like that made by a lot of different brands, and sold by some name like "wool rag socks" (possibly "ragg"). Not all brands will be equal quality; I second joan_holloway's recommendation of Darn Tough.

Best answer: I'm almost positive they're not Darn Tough, but I will third that recommendation. It hurts to buy them, but they do have a lifetime guarantee, and they make your feet happy.

But yeah, I agree with bondcliff, those look a lot like Thorlo socks.

(I'm a big fan of Darn Tough. I'm wearing them right now and wear them almost every day. I recommend them to anyone looking for socks and I will go to my grave singing their praises, but I hike in 15 year-old Thorlos that look just like the one linked to by the OP. My Darn Tough look nothing like that and most DTs have a logo on them.)

They also look very similar to Smartwool, which you can get at any REI.

You may also want to look at Costco's Kirkland brand of Hiking Socks. Which look quite a bit like that. A set of four pair will run about $15-20. They're by and large all I ever wear in any season, having the perfect combination of fit, durability, breathability and warmth.

Response by poster: "Thorlo" is a winner, and thanks for the other recommendations! I'll gladly take more, particularly for mid-weight socks, as my Thorlos are "real winter" socks, and too much for the rest of the year.

I'm going to say SmartWool - those are mrjane's favorite socks. That particular style is technically discontinued, but I recently found 2 pair on Amazon for his birthday. He also likes the Costco Kirkland Hiking socks, which seanmpuckett describes, but they aren't quite as warm as the SmartWools, according to mrjane.

Try REI.

They have other materials in addition to "Smartwool," which can't be very smart because it itches (disregard that last if not applicable).

Thorlo makes a wide range of socks for year-round use. I wear a version of their long running socks all year. I also have a couple pairs of slightly thicker socks (they’re blue) that I also use throughout the year.

Hi flt - here to nth Darn Tough socks, which I learned about from jessamyn's recommendations here. (And admittedly I also enjoy the pun in the brand name.)

They're made by Cabot Hosiery Mills in Vermont, which also makes a brand of socks called Cabot & Sons which are a little less pricey I think; can't remember if C&S has the lifetime guarantee. I like both a lot. REI often has sales on Darn Tough. I also sometimes see both brands sold locally at deep discounts at off-price places like Marshalls/TJX stores (when this happens it feels like winning the jackpot). Some are marked "irregular" (which has no lifetime guarantee) but are still great for the price; no complaints here.

My favorites are their merino wool + Expelit midweight-cushioned socks.

Glad so many others here appreciate socks that last. (When I was in high school, my parents asked me what I wanted for Christmas and I said "new socks that don't wear out as fast." I got a big box of socks -- weren't as durable as Darn Tough, which wasn't around then, but they lasted me through the rest of high school and all of college.) I'm happy you like your socks! I hope you get a bunch more for your stable.
