A hood that sticks waaaaay out

MeFites, I want a coat with a hood that has (faux) fur trim that I can roll out so it sticks out far past my face to block the sun. From the side, it looks like a periscope. I have seen people wearing such coats (e.g., a men's Canada Goose parka, except that's animal fur). How do I search for this type of hood? Does it have a name?

I have been on the hunt for a new winter coat for a while now. I thought I might be able to buy a regular coat and have the hood altered as LaBellaStella suggested, but I haven't found a seamstress who knows what I'm talking about, let alone one who can actually make a hood extension. Just adding fur trim won't do it; it has to roll out by at least 3-4 inches, plus fur.

I have been to every conceivable store and no one seems to have this type of coat. Images of hooded coats online almost never show a model wearing it with the hood up.

A winter coat and a sun hat look really funny together. I need your help!

Snorkel hood?

My north face Gotham parka does this, but it’s an older version so I’m not sure about the current version. It has a detachable faux fur trim, which is fur on one side and the parka fabric on the other. So perhaps other detachable faux fur trim hoods might work as well.

The N3-B snorkel parka is the template here. Spiewak, Alpha and Schott make variants that are close to the original military spec, and "snorkel parka" will guide you to cheaper ones that have that look.

I don't know if there's a specific name for this hood type, but I have an L.L. Bean Baxter State Parka and when it's fully done up it's like I'm looking out of a tunnel. The fur is fake (and also removable, if you ever want to). It's a really good coat, though do note that Bean went back on their lifetime guarantee a year or so ago.

It's a snorkel hood. Most cold weather parkas have them.

^ I, too, have an LL Bean Baxter State Parka (ladies' version) and when its deep hood is up, you will be periscoping, for sure. The hood is detachable, as well as the generous fake-fur ruff. If you use the hood, the head and neck coverage is superb; you will not need a scarf or additional hat.

Snorkel parka.

It's not just for sun. In very cold climates it helps keep heat in.

If you find yourself in a very cold climate, stores there are much more likely to carry them. Thrift stores in colder areas are a good place to look for these as well, particularly in the off season, a friend picked on up on a road trip to Montana this summer.

Edit: of note is that the blocking of vision isn't generally seen as plus, more a trade off for the warmth. A tailor or seamstress who is in places where these are commonly worn should be able to handle this sort of job, you might be able to send it out for having the work done?

Response by poster: Snorkel! I love you MeFites. I am in the coldest of places and I'm sure I can find it now that I know what it's called.
