CoveredCA gave my number away

I recently used CoveredCA, apparently the official California ACA Healthcare Exchange, to try to get insurance. I've not given my number to anyone else. I now get 20+ calls a day from various insurance brokers. Neither CoveredCA nor the Healthcare Commissioner's office says they can do anything about this. Has anyone else had issues like this trying to use the ACA? Who should I contact to complain, even if I can't make it stop?

Yes, I ask for my number to be taken of call lists. Yes, I'm on the federal no-call list. Yes I'm sure that I haven't given my number out to any other insurance entity in the last month.

The Commissioner's office seemed incredulous that they had anything to do with it, but admitted that they weren't really very attached to CoveredCA. I was instructed to contact a representative, any idea where I should start?

Happened to me first time I ACAd. now I block any broker calls and only use a google voice number for all that.

Response by poster: tilde, certainly a good idea going forward. I'm a little shocked that this is how the ACA works here. I've blocked about 30 numbers with no results so far. I'm also looking for work, so I have to answer unfamiliar numbers from CA.

I haven't used any of the exchanges and I'm still getting inundated with these calls. If it's a cell phone, you can download an app like Hiya and it'll reduce the number somewhat.

Best answer: It is unlikely that CoverCA released your phone number. It is prohibited by law from doing so. You can read their privacy policy here.

CoverCA is only permitted to release your personal information to third parties as required to process your application. For example, they would give it to the insurance company you contracted with, obviously.

A few possibilities. The insurance company you purchased from may have released it. You may have been in contact with a third party insurance broker that released it. You may simply be part of the random annual robocall deluge that occurs during open enrollment period.

It is unlikely that CoveredCA is responsible for the leak.

I think they’re just robo dialing everyone.

I kept my 510 number when I moved to the mid-Atlantic (which was before the ACA existed), and can corroborate that I get literally hundreds of robocalls during open enrollment, all from CA numbers.
