How to Change Careers Away from Education

I have been working in the field of education for 15 years (as a high school teacher and in instructional technology), and I am now ready to move on to a new career. My parents are aging, and I need a fully-remote job so that I can visit them more often while they're still here.

My contract with my school district ends in early June, so I will need to find a job that starts in June or July. When should I start job hunting knowing that I can't start until June? Should I find a headhunter? How can I prepare myself for this job search? Are former teachers stigmatized in the business world? If so, how can I overcome that? I would appreciate any advice that you have for me!

My bachelor's degree is in Information Systems, and my master's degree is in Education. I did work in technology consulting for several years before I became a teacher.

Best answer: Transitioning to a whole new field could take a while. You may need to do more networking and build up connections in the field you want to move into or you may need to get some additional certifications.

As a transition step perhaps you could teach online. My state has an online school where teachers do all their work remotely. I've even met a few teachers who taught online and they were all great. It might be something to check out.

You could also check out the Virtual Vocations job site. They list all remote opportunities in a lot of fields.

Former professor to fully remote Salesforce consultant. It for sure took a year. I also practically doubled my salary and now have a job that doesn’t require every emotional resource. So yay. I’m happy to share what happened. Memail if you would like.
