Salt Lake City to Monument Valley

I am going to be in Salt Lake City around the 7-11th November. I am busy on the 9th but free after than and can extend my stay a few days either side. I would really like to see Monument Valley, AZ. Is this possible? What would be the best way to do it, bearing in mind I don't drive?

I have seen some recommendations for things to do in SLC but feel free to make any more, including for any trips out of SLC if the MV trip is likely to be too horrible/difficult to contemplate or if you just have better ideas.

Monument Valley is a haul if you *do* drive. Even if there were a good way to get there by bus or train or whatever, it's pretty much in the middle of nowhere (thankfully).

For nature stuff, I'd recommend going out to Antelope Island; not sure what your transit options will be. That, or over the Wasatch Range to the ski areas on the eastern slope.

In town, Squatter's has a great brewpub downtown.

You could see whether there are tour buses that have a tour that would include Monument Valley. They'd probably take longer than you have, though.

Both Bryce Canyon and Zion are beautiful and likely to be available as bus trips from SLC. Don't try to do both, just pick one.

Does it have to be Monument Valley? Because it's a long trip from SLC.

I would suggest Moab as an alternative -- it's likely to be much easier to reach (not just closer but also a bigger visitor industy) has more facilities for an overnight stay, and is the gateway to two of Utah's National Parks, Arches and Canyonlands, the former of which contains Delicate Arch, the iconic landform that represents the state on everything from tourist brochures to license plates. Moab also offers many outfitters who will take you hiking, mountain biking, rafting, etc. in the surrounding area which is a help since all of this is relatively difficult without driving (Canyonlands N.P., in fact, can be pretty difficult to explore even with driving.)

Moab is a nice enough town to visit and Arches and Canyonlands are both stunning (although you actually can't go far wrong with any of the Utah national parks..)

Response by poster: Thanks all, I had pretty much come to the conclusion that I wasn't going to make it to Monument Valley but I thought I would ask on the off chance that the hive had some miracle info. I will take advice and probably stay closer to SLC. Antelope Island looks interesting but I will have a proper look through all the ideas as I have finally pulled my finger out on organising my trip.
