Things to do in Prague

I'm wanting recommendations of things to do while visiting Prague from Oct. 11-20.

Things I would like to do:

1. See a music concert at a larger venue. Bar scenes no longer my scene. Prefer artists I can't easily see in the US. Prefer bands where they play real instruments, love singer/songwriters. Need not be in English. Can be classical.

2. Anything puppet related (probably an overdose of these).

3. Must eat at places or foods to try.

4. Must avoid spots or events.

5. Highly interested in cultural activities like museums, historical places, etc.

6. Would like to see a movie in Czech that isn't dubbed or subtitled.

I prefer not to do typical tourist stuff. I do not speak the language. My budget isn't unlimited, but I'm not too worried about cost.

I will have time on my hands, so it goes without saying that if you live there and want to meet up I am probably in and would buy you lunch or something. I don't drink anymore, so alcohol is out. I'll be staying at an AirBnB for the duration. I want to eat out a lot, but also would love to cook/bake things in the apartment that I can't purchase easily in the US.

I was there in February for a work trip, and two restaurants that I'd highly recommend are Grils and Eska.

They both happen to be from the same restaurant group, and Grils isn't doing anything particularly fancy (grilled / rotisserie chicken), but I was surprised at how well they were doing it. It wasn't expensive and was a great lunch place.

Eska is a more traditional sit down type restaurant, and they have both a la carte and coursed menu options. It was excellent, and included some (I think) modern takes on Czech cuisine.

Crowds on the Charles Bridge are intense. Look for odd hours to go.

One of the unique things about Prague is their tea-room culture which has a distinct eastern vibe to it (a consequence of their ottoman past, I assume). I had a Czech friend to show me around so I don't know how hard it would be without speaking the language, but this place Květinová čajovna was a great slice of Prague daily life.

My wife and I really enjoyed the food at U Tří růží. Museum-wise, we liked the ones for Franz Kafka, Communism and the KGB (the last of which is run by a guy who is a bit of an eccentric personality; people talk a lot about him in their reviews).

Take a food tour with the folks at Taste of Prague! We did so on our first day there, and really set us up to enjoy many meals during our stay, learn a lot about the history, and recent communist past. It was by far one of the best things we did while there.

I saw a movie in the theater inside the Palac Lucerna mall, which also has the upside down horse statue. My movie was American and had Czech subtitles, but they do seem to show Czech movies. This website has their schedule.

We also enjoyed seeing David Cerny's statues and sculptures while walking around.

Seconding Taste of Prague! We loved it and even went back to a few places we visited (that we never would have found on our own). And you must try trdelník with ice cream--there are street vendors everywhere.

I recommend taking the funicular up Petrin Hill, if only for the view.

Museum Kampa for modern art.

If you go to Petrin Hill, stop by the Memorial to the Victims of Communism.

This is extraordinarily specific and maybe no longer true, but at the base of the Charles bridge there is /was a bookshop run by a Prague historical society. If you show appropriate interest the staff will bring you up to the bridge tower.

I went to see a ballet at the National Theatre in Prague a couple of years ago, and frankly it remains one of the most captivating modern dance performances I think I've ever seen.

It's also an incredibly beautiful building. Highly recommend checking out whatever's on.

ND - the box office was, weirdly, in the main square, not the theatre itself - took me ages to figure that out!
