Everything has gone pear shaped...

A tree in our backyard is growing this delightful looking fruit which sure looks like pears. Can anyone identify the type of pear/tree and if it's advisable to eat them?

Bosc pears are a little crisper when ripe than some other varieties. They should be sweet and nutty but they don't get to that meltingly-sweet stage you might expect if you're more accustomed to yellow pears.

Bosc pears. Highly advisable to eat. Particularly awesome in a franjipan tart.

Note that pears don't ripen on the tree - you have to pick them and let them ripen for a few days.

Visually, it could either be a conference or a bosc. If you're in the US, I'd say probably bosc.
