What kind of mushroom is this? They pop up at night, usually after some rain, in cedar mulch along my high rise street here in Chicago. Usually dies almost right away when it gets sunny.

Japanese Umbrella Mushroom, or Coprinus plicatilis.

Best answer: I just noticed it was growing in mulch/leaf litter like conditions so I am going to retract my previous response as it is far more likely to be Coprinus auricola or Parasola auricola.
