Physical safety measure you took once you had kids?

I'd eventually like to have "free ranging" (or is it free roaming?) kids - the kind who walk home from school or play unsupervised in the front yard or who can walk down to a store. How can this be done with risk minimized? Are there any GPS devices you can put on babies and kids? Does anyone use walkie talkies or just cell phones for emergencies? What other safety advice should new parents know? Also in areas with mountain lions or bears - is pepper spray or bear spray a good idea?

I am not looking for advice or tips about post-partum anxiety or stats about how unlikely stranger violence/kidnapping is. Yes I know a toddler probably has more chance of being injured from unsecured furniture than a stranger. I know the stats are low, but I still don't want to be one. I find that women are often accused of having some "issue" if they want to take physical safety measures into their own hands, especially if they are interested in carrying weapons, but nobody bats an eye if somebody asks about car seat safety, what neighborhoods are "safe" (hello, privilege), or wrings their hands over school shootings, etc.

This post was deleted for the following reason: Heya, the core question here is fine but tacking on a preemptive complaint about hypocrisy etc. is just gonna kinda doom the question for no good reason. Drop us a line at the contact form if you want to talk about editing some of that out and bringing this back up, or just plan to post a rewrite in a day or two. -- cortex
