VR on the small?

I just bought myself a nifty new gaming laptop which is way more than powerful enough to run Oculus or Vive. Here's the thing - I have one small room, with furniture in it. Can I enjoy my VR experience WITHOUT having space to walk around?

I rent a bedroom in a shared house, and have regular bedroom furniture. I don't really want to / like to take up any of the shared space, and this VR rig would be strictly for my own enjoyment anyway. Given that there's not a lot of floor space for moving around, can I still have a good VR time with either of those rigs while remaining seated at my desk?

I have an Oculus set up in my apartment's average-sized office and consider it tight but doable. Definitely make sure you have somewhere stable to put the sensors.

You may want to consider the Windows MR headsets; their biggest limitation (effective tracking at room scale) isn't as big of a concern when you're already limited in tracking space to begin with. The lack of sensors also means you don't have to dedicate space to it in quite the same way.

It really varies. I use VR primarily for seated experiences (simulators with cockpits), and even though I have space, I mostly just sit at my desk. If you want to run around more, you may run into problems with a tight space.

Flight simulators are good in a seated position. (Elite Dangerous.)

Rhythm dancing games are good in a standing position. (Beat Saber. Audioshield. Holodance. Fruit Ninja.)

Room-scale games are out.

Some desktop games have VR mods (Doom 3, Kerbal Space Program), but they are still designed for a seated position.

Some desktop games can be projected into VR (see vorpX), but it's rarely better than a regular monitor. I would love to get something like Soma or The Witness working with this.

There are a lot of good games that you can play sitting (I expect you to die is really well done in this respect).

If you've got room to stand and duck and wave your arms then there are plenty of shooting games which you can play with your feet planted (space pirate trainer is good fun). Standing beside a bed would be fine as long as you remember it's there.
