I want a green house, not a greenhouse

I'd like a bench to put a few small herb plants on. The goal is to have somewhere to put them that's not the floor, but I also want something unobtrusive-I'm not looking to make this part of the decor. I'm having trouble finding something online and am hoping the hive can help.

I'm thinking some sort of light-colored wood, maybe bamboo. Ideally it'd be about a foot high, but 18 inches is the very max. No more than a foot wide. Length is flexible, but 3ft max. Budget is say, $50, although less would be nice.

Best answer: Would something like this bamboo shoe rack fit the bill?

You could probably find something at Ikea, with some creative thinking - for instance, this height extender meant for the Billy bookcase, or a step stool (or two), or turn this shelf unit on its side (slightly larger than your spec with height/depth 13.5")...

Of course, if you or a handy friend have a hammer, nails and some plywood or 1x4s this would be a quick (like, 30-minute) job.

I GOT IT!!

Target. Wood & Metal Indoor Planter - Project 62. Linked to wood & metal version, also comes in white with metal base.

Whoopsie - it links to the default white colored one. Choose the wood version of the piece and scroll through the pics to see it set up as a planter. I hope it's perfect, I really liked it when I saw it.

Best answer: Ikea has some particularly cute things for this very need right now.

Look on craigslist for someone who has live edge slab wood, which is a thick slab of wood with the edge untrimmed, often with bark. You should be able to pick up a piece that's 2 feet long, maybe 12 inches wide, for pretty cheap, from a trimmed piece. Get some wood blocks, glue on underneath. I recommend several coats of Waterlox to seal it. (2 coats waterlox & varnish, 3 coats Waterlox, dries fast, so not a huge hassle.)

Unfinished wood crate?

In my (concrete) back yard, I just use cinderblocks or bricks for this. Sometimes with a scrap board on top. However, Ikea and Target/Container Store/Home Depot/etc. are a good bet if you get a little creative in your thinking, as noted above. Look in the kitchen section for countertop risers, closet organizer section for things like that bamboo shoe rack, and in the kids' section for wee benches.

You might try a recycle store for live edge slab wood; one by me has quite a bit of it. I'm about to make a table out of one of the slabs for the same thing - something to put plants on. I'm going to buy it some hairpin legs from Amazon - you can get any height. Very easy, inexpensive, will look better than a lot of alternatives.
