What was this movie? Lonely misfits on a date

I saw this on TV many years ago, probably some time in the early aughts. This was in the US. No idea what channel. Short plot summary here, more details below the cut: A couple on a dinner date in the woman's home have tense conversations and reveal strange vulnerabilities.
The movie was in English. I believe it was set in the 80s or 90s. The entire film took place in the woman's urban apartment. I think it starts out with her alone, wandering around and looking out the window. Her place was neat and fairly spacious, but not luxurious. She had a Les Miserables poster on the wall. Eventually her date arrives. They are both white and in their 30s or 40s. I think he wore a suit and had a receding hairline. He carries a briefcase. I think she may have had on a pair of blue high heels, but I'm not certain.
It does not feel romantic. They have a strange, sometimes adversarial conversation. I think they are colleagues. The briefcase is supposed to contain some prestigious piece of writing he is working on. At some point, it's revealed that the writing is a sham. The woman has a room or nook in the apartment with a dollhouse or other childlike toys in it; it seems to serve as a kind of retreat for her from some kind of trauma.
This could have been an adaptation of a play. The color pallete was dark, with a lot of blue in it. It felt long and humorless. It wasn't good but it's driving me batty trying to identify it. What was this movie?
