happy queer fam filter

What are your favorite representations of queer families in media (books, television, games, and comics especially?)

I'm looking for positive representations (i.e. realistic struggles is good, but no tragic queer tropes plz). Anywhere from fluffy/feel-good to slice-of-life realistic. Bonus points (but not mandatory) for families with children, adoption/foster parenthood, non-normative lives (broadly defined), and cute animals.

Thanks!

The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli is a YA novel with a lovely family with lesbian mothers. That’s not the main focus, but the family aspects play a big role.

Saving Montgomery Sole, a YA book by Mariko Tamaki with gay moms, a gay friend, and a misfit protagonist.

Best answer: I really like Kevin Cozner and Raymond Holt on Brooklyn 99 (and their dog Cheddar). They're a gay interracial married NY couple (and Holt is a cop, Cozner is a professor) and they never play any of that for easy laughs.

I literally just finished (like, less than an hour ago) The Prince and the Dressmaker and I cannot recommend it highly enough. The main plotline is a coming-of-age friendship/romance tale but there is a lot of family stuff in there too-- and a happy ending.

Best answer: This is why I like Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid. Check out this recent comment for my take. IMO the manga is better than the anime, in terms of less problematic content and more nuanced and satisfying relationship development.

Dirk or Duck might be Cherokee's father in the Weetzie Bat books.

Clarice, Toni, Raffi and Sparrow, Stuart, JR in Dykes to Watch Out For. I read that Bechdel had planned to have Sparrow get an abortion, but then 9-11 happened.

Best answer: Lumberjanes! I can't believe no one has mentioned it this far down! You can consider Roanoke cabin to be "found family" with each other, but also Jo has two dads. Not only do they have cute animals they have MAGIC cute animals!!

Oh and Nimona has some found family stuff going (but also a brief sad scene with some family of origin rejection tropes going on which may disqualify it).

I thought that The Kids are All Right was a really good depiction of this... the central couple are clearly in a successful long-term partnership and raised happy, well-adjusted children. Even though the movie does show a bad time in their marriage...

Best answer: Dykes to Watch Out For. Gets more queer/family in the later strips, love the Ginger/Sparrow/Lois/Jiao & Stu dynamic.

I just read Bingo Love last night and adored it. Warning: it will make you cry, but in a good way. Awesome features: queer women of color; middled-aged to elderly queers; children & grandchildren.

Taproot : a story about a gardener and a ghost by Keezy Young was super sweet, though no kiddos. Can't remember if there are pets, but there are lots and lots of plants!

The family in Jen Van Meter's Hopeless Savages has a gay brother. Each family member gets air time, so he's one of the main characters.
