Streamload alternative?

Now that Streamload charges based on storage use, my chosen backup solution is toast. Does anyone know of similar asynchronous pricing network storage services (e.g., uploads/storage very cheap, downloads expensive)? Or was it all too good to be true?

There was a recent TechCrunch post on online backup solutions - you might find an answer there.

Hrm. I wouldn't trust my data to some company like that, especially with the way that internet companies change pricing models (or simply go under).

What's wrong with just getting an external hard drive?

If you really want cheap (free), there's always Google Mail and this firefox plugin.

Don't know how much storage you need, but I've been using Mozy, one of the ones mentioned in the TechCrunch roundup, for a couple weeks now and am pretty pleased with it given its price (free).

You sign up and give them your email address and they give you a gig storage for free. You fill out a survey and they give you an extra gig. You download a client and can set it to sync specific filetypes or directories automatically when your internet connection isn't being used or at set times. I have it set to backup all my schoolwork in case disaster somehow strikes my laptop and external hard drive.

When you sign up they say they'll send you occasional promotional mailings, but I haven't received any yet. Don't know how long the company will last but you can't beat free and automatic.
