How far can power of attorney extend?

Quick question - it’s too late now but is there any possible way my (now) wife and I could have gotten married while sitting in a bar several miles away, through proxies with power of attorney? This might be a stupid question on its face and you are also not my lawyer. Thank you!

Best answer: Not stupid! But also mostly not legal in the US except in certain states not including the one you live in, though I think you could have done it in Montana if one of you was a resident? "Proxy marriage" is the googleable term, and you can read a little more info on the JailHouse Weddings website. It's a thing usually done by people in the military or in prisons.
