Established Housing Community in NYC?

I'm moving out of my apartment at the end of April, and I'd like to find established housing communities with particularly artsy or liberal themes.

I've been hopping from one bad roommate situation to the next and I'm getting too old for it. I don't like living alone and I'm sick of doing the apartment hunt from beginning to end with the broker. I know of one sex-positive housing community in Brooklyn that houses 15 people, but I think a smaller group would better suit me.

Does anyone have any recommendations for/have heard of any established living communities in NYC? I'm looking for places where the people all have shared interests or other qualities in common, such as a place for artists, queer women, sex-pos and/or poly homes, etc.

What is an established housing community? I follow Gypsy Housing and the variants and never heard the term used which is not a good sign. A quick google search with nothing pop ups up. I'm confused by wanting a one bedroom or not like living alone. Can you provide examples of what you want outside NYC?

Intentional community or co-living are perhaps the terms you’re looking for.

The ones I know in NYC are usually tight-knit, like a group of friends or a band, and thus not quite something one just applies for (the same way that one doesn’t apply for a band!). I’d start by making friends at cooperative/intentional community events and asking your own friends on Facebook.

There is Westbeth Artist Housing in NYC, but I've heard the wait list is very long.

Also look for "cohousing."

I know a few people who live in Brooklyn Co-ops in Bed Stuy, like Divine House and Treehaus and have a few connections there.

Found this old list online that looks like it hasn't been updated in a few years, but might be starting point.

There's Ganas on Staten Island (near the ferry).

You may be able to find like-minded folks to rent a house or loft through The Listings Project.

And you could print flyers advertising your desire for artist co-housing and put them up in group studio buildings in Bushwick, Greenpoint, and Gowanus. (Gowanus addresses in “Location” dropdown)

In the longer term, the New York City Real Estate Investment Cooperative might be of interest to you.
In the short-term, you might contact them to see if any of their members personally know of existing co-ops or arts-focused intentional living situations.
Here one of its founders talks to Art21 about why and how they started NYREIC:

I've occasionally seen listings for spots in places like this on the Nonsense List. Might be worth subscribing.

Please update the thread when you find something, as I'd be interested to hear!
