U.S. House of Representatives Popular Vote?

Where can I find an official source for popular vote results for U.S. House of Representatives elections?

I'm comparing the results of legislative elections in various countries, but I'm having difficulty with the U.S. House of Representatives. Results in the House, AFAICT, aren't often discussed in terms of the *national* popular vote... but that's what I need.

Wikipedia entries for House elections (e.g. 2002) have these figures, but not prior to 1992. And in any case, no source is given and I'm not happy about relying on wikipedia for uncited statistical information.

Many other countries have a national elections agency that makes this information available, but I have found that in the U.S. must of this data is scattered around state-by-state.

Any ideas?
