What is the easiest way to delete my Facebook account?

Haven't used it in years yet I still get emails about posts, and because I don't use it, I don't want it to exist for other people's use. I just want to delete it with a minimum of fuss. If you've done this recently, do you have any tips?

One thing to keep in mind: be careful you don't accidentally sign back in after deactivating and before the deletion goes through. It reactivates and cancels the delete process if you do that before the account gets deleted.

I deleted mine about a month ago, and never looked back. As Brocastinator said, they will definitely try to get you to log back in during those two weeks. DON'T DO IT as you'll have to start the process and the clock all over again.
Also make sure that before you nuke it, you get alternative log ins for all the sites you may be using Facebook to log into. It's a PITA, but it frees you from the mothership.

This is relevant to my interests.
Sidebar: Is there any fast/large-scale way to scrape all your FB photos, before killing your account? Or do they purposely make as difficult as possible as a deterrent?

They make it pretty easy to download an archive of everything you’ve ever posted to Facebook, pictures and video included. No scraping needed. Here are the instructions. I did this a few years ago and it worked great.

I have this tab sitting on my phone's browser How to quit Facebook. It includes instructions for backing up your data.
