Emergency Mixtape: Quitting a Shitty Job Edition
October 20, 2017 8:20 AM   Subscribe

My spouse (MeFi's own Comrade Doll) is about to quit a truly shitty job today. I want to make a "Quitting My Terrible Job" mixtape for her, STAT. I can think of a few right off the bat: "Take This Job and Shove It" by Johnny Paycheck and "Slack Motherfucker" by Superchunk. Give me some more! I need at least ten by say... 5 pm Eastern.

Killing in the Name of by Rage Against the Machine. Yes, it's about war, but there's something about the line " Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me" over and over again that just works for quitting a job.

The Mountain Goats' "Jenny" was my job-quitting theme...it's not specifically about quitting a job, but it is about riding off into the sunset on a questionable motorcycle. "500 ccs of raw whining power, no outstanding warrants for my arrest/Hi diddle-dee-dee, goddamn, the pirate's life for me!"

I don't know if it's just the Office Space connection, but "Damn It Feels Good To Be A Gangsta".

Hell, just the whole Office Space soundtrack.

The Eagles' Already Gone is really about leaving a relationship, but it could totally apply to a job. It's my theme for leaving any situation.

Maggie's Farm by Bob Dylan.

As it happens, there's also a Rage Against the Machine cover of Maggie's Farm.

Not specific to jobs, but the day I quit the only job I've hated, I blasted Fleetwood Mac's Go Your Own Way on the drive home. Catharsis!

Next time I might do Already Gone by the Eagles.

I'm doing the best I ever did (go away)
I'm doing the best that I can (go away)
I'm doing the best I ever did (go away)
I'm doing the best that I can (go away)

I'm doing the best I ever did
I'm doing the best that I can

Now go away!

The Ramones, "It's Not My Place (In the 9 to 5 World)"
The Clash, "Career Opportunities"
Gogol Bordello, "Imigraniada" - this is maybe a little off, but the themes are all around crappy jobs available to new immigrants, and how much bullshit is involved with that

The Ramones, "It's Not My Place (In the 9 to 5 World)"

Could add "We Want the Airwaves" ("nine to five and five to nine / ain't gonna take it / it's our time / we want the world and we want it now / we want the airwaves").

I've always liked Alec Bathgate's version of Chris Knox's "Glide", which is my go-to for bad jobs/situations ("you don't have time in your life / to be fool and foolish").

(I realise I'm too late for the OP, but maybe other people might have the same question...)

The Reel Big Fish song I got in my head after reading through this thread again was actually "All I Want Is More": "Someday...maybe she'll come back to me and I'll say...'WHY DON'T YOU GO FUCK YOURSELF?!'"

Also: "I know it's too late, so why do I wait—it's not my problem anymore!"

Very cathartic, even with the self-loathing twist of the rest of the lyrics. It's fun.

Ah, I wish I'd seen this in time! I once sailed off into the sunset* on a beautiful summer morning with a friend after we spectacularly quit our jobs, and Free by Phish was what we played in the car as we took off. Congrats, Comrade Doll!

* Ok, you say sunset, we said Meyers Pub at 10AM and had friends come meet us for bloody marys, six of one, half a dozen t'other...

I'm late too, but I had to share. The Mountain Goat's No Children was ... the theme song ... for 5+ years of my life at a job that should have ended 10 years before it got to that point. I sang the fuck out of it--out loud--on my bike ride home from my last day working there, and there have been very few experiences in my life that matched the joy and catharsis of those ~3 minutes.
