Why, Lyft, why?

Lyft says I disputed credit card charges with my bank. I did not do this, and told them so. They refuse to tell me what's going on.

This weekend Lyft contacted me about charges I supposedly disputed with my bank. I wrote back right away to say that I had not disputed any charges, Lyft or otherwise. My bank has no idea what Lyft is talking about. I've asked Lyft for more information about this situation, as I'd really like to understand what went wrong and how it can be avoided in the future. They are refusing to share any information, and keep stonewalling me with some line about "for legal reasons, we cannot share our internal processes." I've been shut down via both email and on Facebook. Any ideas what's going on here?

Are you 1000% sure the email is from Lyft?

And when you say shut down, do you mean you’re not being responded to?

Response by poster: Absolutely, 1000% sure - it's an email address I've used for Lyft before. (And, anyway, I got the same response on their FB page, which is certainly legitimate.)

Via email, they gave me the "legal reasons" spiel and then stopped responding (I pinged them nicely a couple of times). On FB, they gave me the same "legal reasons" spiel and refused to say anything different.

Is your account being penalized in any way for this?

Because otherwise I would just assume it was a mistake and straight up ignore it.

Response by poster: Per the OP, I'm not asking what I should do. I'm asking if anyone has ideas for what might have inspired Lyft to think I disputed charges.

Best answer: Somebody else disputed charges on their own account and lyft has confused them with you.

Could be a software bug on their end. There's lots of small math errors that can end up with incorrect info in the database or pulling the wrong person's account details. If someone has the same first and last name as you, a sloppily constructed API for the payment system to submit disputes could have associated someone else's dispute with your account. It's hard to tell with what little information they were willing to give you.

Anecdotally, several people at my work who have business credit cards have had fraudulent charges from Lyft on them. The whole thing (and then this) makes me feel like their security isn't great.

And at my company, when someone reverses a charge, we do everything we can to get them to cancel it so we can refund the charges instead. So I can't imagine why they wouldn't give you more details so you could do that.

What does your bank say about what's going on? Have you called them?
