Should I buy a Seagull guitar when I visit Montreal?

I am considering buying a Seagull S6 guitar, which retails for about $400 in the US, where I live. It's made in Canada and I'm visiting Montreal next week.

Would I get a better deal buying it in Canada? If so, any recommendations of where to go? I will have a car and am willing to travel a bit if the price is right. Thanks!

Axe Music is one of Canada's biggest online retailers, or so they claim. A Seagull S6 is CA$399 plus GST (5% for Quebec).

GuitarCenter is a well known USA based chain. A Seagull S6 is $399 plus sales tax for your state.

Add in the difference in currencies. Decide which is better.

Response by poster: Appreciate the pointer to Axe, they are new to me. Looking for a brick and mortar suggestion--where are stores with good prices as my trip is too short to trust that delivery would work out.

Apparently it does retail for less in Canada once the exchange rate is figured in. With the current exchange rate it would benefit me to buy the guitar at $400 Canadian....

I am not sure how long you'll be in Canada, but be sure you consider whether or not you would have to pay duty on it, too.

If you are visiting Montreal, Steve's is the place that I remember (we're talking 10+ years now) that my musician friends used to go.

Here is the search result for Seagull S6.

$399 same as in town. You will save on conversion and may not have to pay duties depending on how long you will be in Canada.

Oh but taxes here total are about 15% (5% federal + 9.975% provincial).

Looks to be the same price but Archambault has it too. The boyfriend suggests calling Jimi's music store (they don't have a website) (both staff are bilingual).

You can get an okay deal on the price with the exchange, but it might not be worth the entire fuss of taxes and duties.

My idea of having fun while on vacation would include visiting music instrument stores and looking at guitars and things. If this is your idea fun, then you should do it.

Response by poster: I think that's where I'm ending up. I could save a few bucks in the end, but probably not enough to justify the hassle.

I appreciate all the suggestions, folks. Thanks for helping me think it through.
