Offline ipad games for an 11-year-old?

We are going on a very long road trip, and would love to have some good offline games for our kiddo. Do you have any recommendations? We can probably repurpose an iphone, as well. All devices are a bit dated.

If there's a way to tell whether a game can be played offline before downloading it, I'd love to know it.

Other suggestions welcome!

Minecraft (this version cost $)

Yes, I strongly recommend the Awakening series! They're perfect for 11-year olds (and I love them too). They're hidden object puzzle adventure games and you usually download them for free, then after some free gameplay you have to pay $6.99 to continue. Which seems a bit steep, but it takes hours - usually anywhere between 4-8 - to complete, and it's got great puzzles to complete along the way. You have to be online to buy, so make sure to check them out before you leave and pay for the full version before you set out.
The storyline is fantasy - a young woman awakens in a castle and is trying to figure out what happened and how to find her parents. Once downloaded and paid for, each game is offline.

The first game is Awakening: The Dreamless Castle, which I couldn't find a link to, but here's the Goblin Kingdom, #3 in the series, so you can see what I'm talking about. I would recommend starting at the beginning, but it isn't necessary.

Plague, Inc was a big hit with my 12 y/o boy and his 15 y/o stepbrother when we drove from Portland Oregon to Yellowstone.
Plants V. Zombies, Angry Birds, Fairway Solitaire, Peggle, Joe Danger, Human Resources are all playable offline.

If you have a Netflix or Amazon Prime account, you can also download videos from them.

Have a good trip!

Solebon Solitaire has a bajillion (maybe more like 50 or so--I'm not sure, I only play Klondike) solitaire games.

rymdkapsel
Train Conductor World
Mini Metro
These all worked on my phone in Airplane Mode which is as close to offline as I can get. I can't guarantee they'll work on dated devices.

Ballz is incredibly popular with the 7th graders I teach. It honestly didn't look very interesting to me but, hey, kids.

I'm pretty sure the Game of Life is playable offline. It's probably a couple bucks (I got it for free a bit ago). It's pretty close to the actual board game.
