MRI in NYC

I need to obtain an MRI of my shoulder (which I dislocated and fractured) along with an injection of contrast dye. I am in New York City. Can you recommend a location? Most places seem to have very poor reviews online, especially from patients who also required a dye injection. I have insurance. Thanks.

Did your treating doctor recommend a facility or do they have their own? I would ask them for a rec and then take it (assuming the MRI facility takes your insurance).

I have had at least 10 MRI w/contrast in my life and I can say that there are two aspects to a facility. One is competency. It appears to me that this is a function of not so much the facility but the technician doing the MRI and the radiologist who interprets what the technician did. It seemed kind of random to who was scheduled to work that day or that hour. Two, customer service. Did they take you on time? Was the waiting area reasonable? Were they responsive to requests for copies of the images? I would also consider convenience, your convenience. Is it easy for you to get to the location? Is it near work or home? Also, how easy it for your prescribing doctor to get images and reports? Is it timely?

I have had good experience at NYU Langone Center for Musculoskeletal Center

I've always been referred internally for MRI. But this link seems to imply you can schedule one over the phone.

I never had dye injected however.

You're having an MRI arthrogram? Those are a little more complicated technically than a regular MRI because the dye has to be injected directly into the joint, and they should be done at a facility that does a lot of them. I'm surprised your orthopedist doesn't have a preferred location; often they have strong opinions about what imaging centers have the best studies. If you don't, I would look into a place like the Hospital for Special Surgery or the NYU center referenced above, or at least an academic center where they are likely to have a dedicated musculoskeletal radiologist doing the protocol and reading the images.

Thirding NYU. They're nationally recognized for their musculoskeletal/rehab care and will do a fantastic job with this sort of thing. They also take more forms of insurance than most of the major hospital centers in NYC ( a godsend for me) and are great about things like giving you your records, sending them to your doctor, etc. Also just really nice people in general.

Hospital for Special Surgery is probably the best for MSK imaging related to sports injury in NYC.

I just had an MRI arthrogram. Just a note that the injection of dye is an actual injection (i.e., not IV + push of dye). For my particular pain, the injection pretty much tripled my pain level for about 3-4 minutes. They supposedly include lidocaine along with the injected dye, but I did not expect it to hurt as much.

Sorry I can't help you with an NYC location. Just looking to make sure you know what you're up against.

Response by poster: I wound up going to Lenox Hill Radiology on 77th Street (which my doctor had in fact recommended). I was mystified at all the negative reviews. Service there was fast, professional, and very kind. I would personally recommend the location.
